Diamonds and the legends

peacock set

Fascinating and alluring, did you know the diamond has always been the subject of legends?  Centuries ago Alexander the Great discovered the Valley of Diamonds on one of his voyages to India. As the valley was guarded by numerous poisonous snakes, Alexander displayed a great example of cunning thought process to get through them. He used mirrors to frighten away the snakes with their own reflection. Lately, some individuals as well as institutions have also suggested that the popular Hope diamond caused the Titanic to sink merely by its sheer presence.

Origin of the diamond ring

Diamond Ring

In a relatively recent tradition, the diamond has come to symbolise the Engagement Ring. Every woman in this world owe a ‘Thank you’ to Marie of Burgundy for starting the custom, after she received a diamond ring from the Archduke Maximilian of Austria in the year 1477. It is interesting to know that wearing an engagement ring, or a wedding band on the third finger of the left hand, eventually dates back to the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the ‘love vein’ linked the heart and the ring finger. In current times, it is equally linked to the month of April and to the virtues of strength and patience 🙂
